Gelecek Uzun Sürer / Future Lasts Forever

Gelecek Uzun Sürer'in en büyük özelliği sessizliği.

Future Lasts Forever's most significant characteristic is its silence. And this is more than it's choice of the way of telling its story, but it is its story.

The story has several affecting moments, details and contradictions, which all call for loud and clear statements. Yet, they all lapse into silence, remain told but not commented on. And in the end, this very silence becomes the film's story itself.

The story's point of view is located on the cities, on people who are apolitical or simply passive. This does not mean that the film's characters do not care, that they tend to forget, nor that they do not understand. Yet, their hands are tied, their hopes are killed and they do not move, or can't. The film's silence tell this very feeling, of not moving, of not being able to move: After one of the hundreds of the miserable stories, Ahmet and Sumru lay down on the beds, without sleep and without a word. All they can do is smoking, again in silence and with an open window to let the air in. Later, Sumru asks Ahmet what he is thinking, and Ahmet answers: "I'm thinking what will happen to this country, what more?...". He then answers his own questions by listing peaceful yet dreamy future plans for him and Sumru, about them reading poems to each other, about them traveling. Sumru on the other hand, does not smile, just sits there and listens, silently, perhaps without belief or perhaps just without any feelings...

The artistic beauty of the film's silence causes something else, and that is the scope for the noise in the audiences' heads. In the silence of the story, the contradictions, the sorrow, the anger all stand out. And  just like finishing a sentence, the viewer adds words to it...

Future Lasts Forever tells a very real, sorrowful and an unspoken -still unspoken- story. It, as a matter of fact, does not even own a silent scream, but only a story...
