Les Misérables

Hollywood'un şifrelerini konuşmaktan dilimizde tüy bitti. Ancak bir taraftan da, pek şikayetimiz olduğunu da söyleyemeyiz. Zira, yapbozun parçalarını bilindik yerlere koyup, bize bilindik resimler sunan Hollywood aynı zamanda bu satırlarının yazarının (gizli) tutkusu süper kahraman filmlerini bize veren, hikayeleri allayıp pullayıp gözümüzü boyayan Hollywood; ve yine aynı Hollywood bir de bize üzerinde konuşacak, yerden yere vurabilip, hakkında uzun uzun yazılar yazmamıza olanak sağlayan filmler de sunuyor, sağolsun.

Les Misérables da, izlemeden önce Oscar'lardaki arz-ı endamını gördüğümden olacak, önyargı soslu "tam bir Hollywood yapımı" etiketini çoktan koyduğum bir filmdi. Üzülerek (gerçekten üzülerek) söylüyorum ki, izledim ve etiketi açısından beni yanıltmadı; ama etiketin yapıştırılış yöntemi beklediğim gibi değildi.

Etkileyiciliği hali hazırda mevcut olan bir hikayeye sahip film, aslına bakarsanız küçük mekanlardan çok da çıkmayarak, sanat yönetmenliğini göreceli bir şekilde mütevazi tutarak ve oyunculukların performanslarına ciddi bir yatırım yaparak etkileyicilik potansiyelini kötüye kullanmıyor. Zira ilk sahnenin heybeti - o koca gemi -, küçülüp küçülüp tüm oyuncuların yüzlerine sığıyor ve filme harcanan paraları bir nebze de olsa bize unutturmaya çalışıyor. Ancak film, tam da bu noktada iyi niyetinin kurbanı oluyor ve 'etkileyicilik' oyuncularda hapis kalıyor. Öyle ki, tüm karakterler etrafında olanlardan bağımsız ve birbirleriyle ilişkilerinden (aşkları dahil) adeta alakasız bir şekilde, teker teker sahneye çağırılarak hikayelerini anlatan, sanki birbirlerini görmeyen insanlar haline geliyorlar. Böylece de, 5'er 10'ar senelik atlamalarla verilen hikaye, bundan bağımsız bir şekilde kendi içinde bir kopukluğa sahip olmuş oluyor.

Eğer niyetiniz benim gibi kötüyse, bunun başka bir "haydi oyuncularımıza Oscar kazandıralım" Hollywood yapımı olduğunu düşünebilirsiniz. Ancak biraz daha iyi niyetliyseniz, filmin hikayesini gösteri unsurlarından arındırmaya çalışırken, en büyük kozundan bir gösteri yaratma hatasına düştüğünü söylemek de mümkün.


Hollywood and its gracious crimes are always good topics to talk about. It is our beloved Hollywood that gives us spectacles to be mesmorized and spectacles to drag through the mud, with long reviews - thank you for that! (Also thank you for the superhero movies Hollywood, you know I love you)

In the beginning, before I watched it, Les Misérables, was no different for me: a Hollywood spectacle, heralded by the generous appearances in Oscar Ceremony. Now, after having watched the film, I have to sadly say that I was no wrong. However, the way it becomes a spectacle was unexpected for me. I have to admit that.

It is true that Les Misérables does not abuse its story's effectiveness and instead stays in small spaces, uses its art directory relatively humble and puts all the money on acting (figuratively and literally I suppose). The evidence is the opening scene's grandioseness not being repeated and instead getting smaller to be able to fit into character's faces.

However, exactly at this point, the film becomes a victim of good faith as the effectiveness, the only advantage of the very film, gets stuck in the acting, and does not reach anywhere else. It is so that all the characters become these disconnected people who are asked to come to the stage, given a microphone and asked to tell their stories. It is as if they are all invisible to eachother, regardless of the one big story that puts them together and regardless of the relationships between them - including love. Thus the story itself becomes disconnected, unrelated to it being told with 5, 10 years of leaps.

If you are ill-intentioned like me, you can say that this is another Hollywood movie that had the motive of "letting all the actors earn money an Oscar." Or if you are more merciful than me, you can also say that Les Misarébles tries not to create a spectacle yet it makes the mistake of relying too much on its only strenght, and making it the very spectacle instead.
