Eski Posterler / Old Posters

Bu hafta arşivden çıkarılıp (bazıları ikinci kez) izlenecek filmler:

This week's films that I will remove the dust of:

Susuz Yaz (Metin Erksan, 1964) çünkü Trivia Pursuit on kaplan gücündeki cahilliğimi ortaya çıkarmışken, tek bilebildiğim soru sinema hakkındaydı ve cevap Susuz Yaz'ın yönetmeni, Metin Erksan'dı.

Dry Summer (Susuz Yaz, Metin Erksan, 1964) because I am always a disgrace for my team members when I play Trivia Pursuit but this time, the only question that only I knew was about Dry Summer's director.

Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) because Hitchcock (Sacha Gervasi, 2012) -a film that I want to watch not only to write about but also for pleasure- is about to be in cinemas, to tell the story of legendary Hitchcock, filming the legendary Psycho.

Before Sunrise (Richard Linklater, 1995) çünkü İstanbul Film Festivali'nin ek seanslı filmlerinden biri ve serisinin üçüncü filmi olan Before Midnight (Richard Linklater, 2013) festivalin en keyifli deneyimlerinden biri olacak: 'Bizim dönemin' aşk hikayesi, en güzel 'konuşmalı film', kalbimizde yeri olan hikaye.

Before Sunrise (Richard Linklater, 1995) because one of İstanbul Film Festival's 'sold-out's is Before Midnight (Richard Linklater, 2013), the last film of the trilogy: the love story of our generation, one of the best talkies and a story that lives in our hearts.

Normally I would not need an excuse for Woody Allen but Bananas (Woody Allen, 1971) is one of the few that I haven't seen yet. I found out remembered about Bananas (Woody Allen's third feature film) thanks to Woody Allen: A Documentary . It looks like a story told by a series of skits, all of which are full of Allen's early absurdism, the absurdism that he later uses not as the story itself but as a way of telling his stories.

Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb (Stanley Kubrick, 1964) çünkü bu film izlemeye doyum olmayan, fazlasıyla zeki bir satir ve Hasan Cömert, twitter'da, böyle bir belgeselin varlığından bahsetti: Inside Dr. Strangelove. (Ben de re-tweet ettim)

Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb (Stanley Kubrick, 1964) because it is an extremely intelligent satire and "one of the best," and also because Hasan Cömerttweeted about this sweet documentary: Inside Dr. Strangelove. (And I re-tweeted it)

Les Misérables

**Scroll down for English.**

Hollywood and its gracious crimes are always good topics to talk about. It is our beloved Hollywood that gives us spectacles to be mesmorized and spectacles to drag through the mud, with long reviews - thank you for that! (Also thank you for the superhero movies Hollywood, you know I love you)

In the beginning, before I watched it, Les Misérables, was no different for me: a Hollywood spectacle, heralded by the generous appearances in Oscar Ceremony. Now, after having watched the film, I have to sadly say that I was no wrong. However, the way it becomes a spectacle was unexpected for me. I have to admit that.

It is true that Les Misérables does not abuse its story's effectiveness and instead stays in small spaces, uses its art directory relatively humble and puts all the money on acting (figuratively and literally I suppose). The evidence is the opening scene's grandioseness not being repeated and instead getting smaller to be able to fit into character's faces.

However, exactly at this point, the film becomes a victim of good faith as the effectiveness, the only advantage of the very film, gets stuck in the acting, and does not reach anywhere else. It is so that all the characters become these disconnected people who are asked to come to the stage, given a microphone and asked to tell their stories. It is as if they are all invisible to eachother, regardless of the one big story that puts them together and regardless of the relationships between them - including love. Thus the story itself becomes disconnected, unrelated to it being told with 5, 10 years of leaps.

If you are ill-intentioned like me, you can say that this is another Hollywood movie that had the motive of "letting all the actors earn money an Oscar." Or if you are more merciful than me, you can also say that Les Misarébles tries not to create a spectacle yet it makes the mistake of relying too much on its only strenght, and making it the very spectacle instead.

Silver Linings Playbook

Scroll down for English.

*This post tastes much better if read after having watched the film.

I exchange the in-fact-already-yesterday's-news oscar debates with a little bit of sleep and a little bit of recognition-desire in other social media platforms. And instead, I watched Silver Linings Playbook. Very late.

I loved the camera angles that narrow down the locations, I loved the theme of miserable people not becoming a spectacle and lastly I loved the catharsis lacking real solutions:

"When I'm crazy, my craziness make the streets, houses, rooms and hotels tiny, with narrow halls and small walls. When I'm crazy, the rooms are so small that I do not know where to look - that's the reason of my eyes constantly moving. The world is just too small, when I'm crazy.

When I'm crazy, it is easier for you to see the 'craziness' in the whole world; the 'craziness' in everyone. Yet don't be alarmed, I will not talk about it, nor that I will show it. And that's because people have more important problems in their lives, they are busy on getting crazy.

In fact, we are so busy that we do not have time to talk about my healing - if ther is any. I did my talk by whispering and it's not important if you didn't hear it. Just stay on the positive side. Everything is simple in the end: probably I'm still crazy, most probably that my bestfriend will get a divorce - or die unhappy, and my dad might have had my photo on the wall but he still keeps the remotes in the room. Nothing has changed in this house, it's still the same sunday."
